Table Mountain

Table Mountain is probably Cape Town’s most famous attraction. Rising 1087 metres above sea level, the spectacular flat-topped mountain is a magnificent sight to behold.

A popular means of experiencing Table Mountain is to hike up, replenish your energy at the restaurant at the top, admire the magnificent views and then catch the cable car down. For a truly unforgettable experience, Paul, your host, will guide you on a walk across the back of Table Mountain down to The Last Word Bishopscourt.

Table Mountain Highlights:

  • Spectacular 360 degree views of Cape Town and surrounds
  • Revolving cable car
  • Numerous hiking and mountain biking trails
  • Restaurant and curio shop at the top of the mountain

Explore the mountain on foot, by mountain bike or simply by enjoying a leisurely picnic on the slopes. One can access the top of Table Mountain by either taking the cableway or by the many hiking trails of various degrees of difficulty. The cableway is the more popular option, so there are often long queues at the cableway station in high season. The cablecar revolves so the views on the way up are dramatic. The ride to the top only takes 2 minutes (as opposed to a minimum 4-hour hike), and every day about 2500 visitors are taken up. The cablecar is weather dependent, so be sure to check with the cableway station first.

There are many hiking trails across the mountain, of varying levels of difficulty. This said, climbing Table Mountain should only be attempted by the physically fit as some of the trails can be physically daunting and many people have gotten lost due to underestimating the difficulty of the trail or unpredictable weather.

Mountain biking on Table Mountain is also a popular activity. There are many mountain biking trails below Tafelberg Road - the road taking you up to the cableway station. You won’t be able to ride to the top, but a popular route ascends to the Kings Blockhouse and there are also a number of contour paths where you can test your biking skills. Abseiling off the mountain is also an option for the more adventurous.
